Kumar Pramatha Nath Roy

Kumar Pramatha Nath Roy was a prominent Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and social worker known for his extensive contributions to society and industry. He founded the Kumar Pramatha Nath Roy Public Charitable Trust in Kolkata to ensure his philanthropic efforts would continue beyond his lifetime.

Born into the Bhagyakul Roy Family , he completed his education and then joined his family business and demonstrated remarkable industriousness, significantly expanding its reach and success. He held numerous esteemed positions throughout his career, including Honorary Magistrate at Sealdah Court, Vice-President of the British Indian Association, and member of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce, among others. His business acumen was further exemplified through partnerships in various companies, including Premchand Ray & Co. and the East Bengal River Steam Service Ltd., as well as directorships in several insurance and banking institutions.

Roy’s commitment to social welfare was evident through his extensive charitable work. In 1939, he established a charitable hospital in honour of his father, Raja Sreenath Roy, in Srinagar, Bangladesh. He invested in infrastructure, building bridges and roads, and creating a ‘ghat’ on the Brahmaputra River for public use. His dedication to education is highlighted by his donations to hostels for Ramakrishna Mission students in Narayanganj and Dumdum.

Roy was also a significant benefactor of various philanthropic organizations, including the Bharat Sevashram Sangha, the Red Cross Society, and the Ramakrishna Mission. He notably contributed to the Bharat Sevashram Sangha office in Ballygunge, Kolkata, where a hall is named in honour of his father Raja Sreenath Roy. His philanthropy extended to numerous Hindu pilgrimage sites across India and Bangladesh, where he supported the maintenance of these sacred locations.

In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Kumar Pramatha Nath Roy was an active supporter of the Swarajya Dal and other patriotic organizations, contributing to the Indian freedom movement. His dedication to social justice extended beyond charity, as he played an integral role in advocating for the rights and freedoms of his fellow countrymen. His involvement in these movements demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the ideals of independence, self-governance, and the upliftment of society. Through both his charitable work and his support for the freedom struggle, he left an indelible mark on
the social and political landscape of his time.

Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to uplifting those in need, and his efforts have left a lasting impact on countless lives. His vision and compassion continue to inspire the Trust’s mission to this day.
